ASNET lead stakeholders in the Animal feed industry for a stocktaking meeting on implementation of Animal feeds cost reduction framework developed towards the end of last year with Principal Secretary, State Department of Livestock PS Harry Kimtai. The stakeholders agreed on allowing the importation of 99.1% non- GM material since the 100% non-GM previous offer through a gazette notice was not taken due to unavailability.
The stakeholders also jointly did a review of implementation of other immediate and short term measures recommended in the framework, with strong recommendations on escalation of alternatives to the traditional sources of protein such as the use of BSF among other issues. The interventions are expected to both increase accessibility as well as lower the cost of feeds in the long run.
Present in the meeting was Cereal Millers Association, AKEFEMA, Cereal Growers Association, Biosafety Authority, New KCC, Farmers Choice, KEPSA and officials from the Ministry.
